About This Fundraiser

I have participated in Riding Against Trafficking (RAT) to help eradicate trafficking in Korea during the Chuseok holiday. I found out that many prostitutes began as an adolescent, who were exposed to the danger of sex trafficking. I think supporting them is one of the various ways to help solve sex trafficking. So, I will participate in the marathon held by Oak Tree Project.

Oak Tree Project is a program that provides the ability to enter into college from an orphanage though financial and psychological support. Once these children turn 18, they must move out of the government subsidized orphanages and live on their own. So, that they don’t think about suicide, which can lead to depression; they are more vulnerable of possibly entering into the sex industry. According to a 2016 sexual violence report from Statistics Korea, among seven thousand and two hundred people [Men: 1,800people (25%), Women: 5,400people (75%)]. High school graduates occupy about half (49.8%) of the total number. Also, among adolescents at risk from trafficking, 173 people under the age of 19, 61.8% did conditional meetings. This means that meeting with someone for certain interests includes lots of improper reasons. The main reason for it is just money (87.9%). They find it hard to dream about common life, like others do, without someone’s help.

The Oak Tree Marathon is an event to raise funding for scholarships for orphans. Those who are selected as Oak Scholarship students will receive 500,000 won a month for their living expenses. They are not allowed to work during their semesters, but only to focus on their studies. However, more important than money, they lack emotional support and guidance for their lives. So, Oak Tree Project will match them with a mentor. A mentor helps them make great decisions for their lives and help them to graduate. In the process of Oak Tree Project, lots of Oak Scholarship students can keep their own lives stable and create a virtuous circle by receiving scholarships from their college through high achievements.

I want to share a story about Youngseok Kim with you. He is someone who has been with me during the RAT. He grew up in an orphanage since his early childhood. His purpose and reason of life was through the help and provision of others and the memory of abandonment from his family. However, through Oak Tree Project, he overcame the pain about the past. He had a dream that he would like to be a navigator for those who have the same scar like he does. Now, he is trying to build his own career after graduating.

I think that the person who experiences a scar in life can correspond through understanding someone who is alike. The Oak Tree Marathon is a week away for orphans. I want people like Youngseok Kim to appear much more in the future. Please donate to Oak Tree Project as a partner of mine. I believe that our run undoubtedly will make our community and society more healthy.
