Unearthing the Hidden Treasures of Korea
Oak Tree Project is a scholarship fund/mentoring program for Korean orphans attending university.
Most of the children who leave the orphanages have no emotional or financial support. Loneliness, depression, suicidal thoughts, vulnerability to bad jobs and bad influences, and alcohol abuse are all huge dangers for these kids. For most of them they have no one to mentor them and help them get on their feet. The few who are able to attend college often give up because they are so worn out from working all the time to provide for their tuition.
Oak Tree Project was formed to not just provide a scholarship for the orphans, but to also serve as a mentoring program that would give the kids the emotional support and direction that they so sorely need. Although their lives have been rooted in the storms of rejection and struggle, we believe through the love and support of the program they will be able to rise up above the storms as mighty oak trees, unshakable in their identity.
Oak Tree Project began with just four recipients in 2013. The program has grown with each year and Oak Tree Project now has 28 students on roster (each with their own mentor), with 15 students having graduated through the program over the past few years.
Out of the 500,000won given a month, a typical student’s budget is…
40% (~200,000won) spent on food
15% (~75,000won) spent on transportation
15% (~75,000won) spent on personal needs
15% (~75,000won) spent on school supplies and events
15% (~75,000won) spent on cell phone
Out of funds given to the program, about 98% go directly to the students. The rest covers simple administrative costs of the program. All staff and mentors in the program serve strictly as volunteers.
On Saturday, October 15, 2016, Oak Tree Project will be partnering with a race for underprivileged children in Korea to raise funds for scholarships for orphans in South Korea. Orphans in Korea are on their own after they graduate from high school and many struggle to get by financially and emotionally. It is especially difficult for those who get into college who have to work while studying. The stress and loneliness leads to depression and desperation for many, which can lead to prostitution, joining gangs, or even suicide. Oak Tree Project is a scholarship and mentoring program designed to not just help the orphans have funds through college, but to also receive the emotional support and guidance they need to succeed.

The children who grow up in the orphanages of South Korea face many difficult challenges to succeed after they leave the children homes. For those who desire to attend university they must work extra jobs to provide for their tuition and their living needs. Many are unable to finish school because of the financial burden and the lack of emotional support. Oak Tree Project has been created to provide orphans with a scholarship to provide for their living needs and to provide mentors for their emotional well being. Oak Tree Project began in 2013 with four recipients and expanded to nine recipients in 2014. Our hope is to provide for more and more children with each year.
